Being aware of which food to avoid can not only improve your health. It can also save your life. Unhealthy foods are linked to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and clogged arteries. Scientific research shows that eating the wrong foods can also significantly increase your risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease and certain cancers.
Foods That Are Bad for Your Health
1. Sugary Snacks
Sweet foods or snacks such as, candy bars, cookies and cakes, taste so good, but are so bad on the body. The processed sugar raises blood sugar levels. Sweets also have empty calories that could have been replaced with more fulfilling foods that offer more nutritional value.
A good alternative to avoid or reduce the amount of sweets eaten is to eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables offer good nutrition and more can be consumed because it has less calories. The natural sugars in fruit are much better than processed sugars in candy and other treats.
2. Salt
Excess salt in your diet is another big health problem. High levels of sodium create a serious imbalance of minerals, which can water retention and high blood pressure. The healthy thing to do is avoid using table salt and stay away from salted chips, nuts and most processed canned and frozen foods.
3. Ice cream
Go easy on the ice cream. One cup has about 300 calories. Factor in the increase in calories if you add toppings like whipped cream and cookie crumbs. If the temptation becomes too difficult to resist, opt for low fat varieties or choose non fat yogurt instead.
4. Sugary Drinks / Colas
Stop drinking colas and other sugary drinks. They are just non-nutritious empty calories and they only make you thirstier. Stick to pure, clean water. It’s a better thirst quencher and does a better job digesting your food and preventing constipation.
5. Cheese
Cheese is an excellent source of nutrients like protein and calcium. Still, because most cheeses are prepared with whole milk or cream, they are also high in saturated fat and cholesterol. Ounce for ounce, meat, poultry, and most cheeses have about the same amount of cholesterol. Cheeses tend to have much more saturated fat. Trying to figure out which cheeses are high in fat can be confusing, because there are so many different kinds. You have whole, part skim, low fat, processed, and many more. Not all reduced fat or part skim cheeses are low in fat, they are just lower in fat than similar natural cheeses. You should avoid cheese, if you’ve had high cholesterol or try to achieve weight loss.
6. Process meats
Skip processed meats. These include hot dogs, bacon and sausages among others. They mask saturated fat, cholesterol and preservatives with their delicious tastes. The list of diseases that you can get if you consume these meats on a daily basis involve are only all too-familiar — heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity are just some to name a fee.
7. Pastries / Baked Bakery
Pastries, baked goods and sweets have trans fats which should be avoided because they raise your bad cholesterol and lower your good cholesterol levels. Some kinds of vegetable shortening such as some margarines and other foods also have high trans fat content. Be sure to avoid partially hydrogenated vegetable oils if you want to live longer.
8. Cheeseburger and fast food
Cheeseburgers and other fast food burger fare are unhealthy foods to avoid. With mayonnaise and cheese, they can easily add more than 500 calories to your frame and a give you more than 900 grams of sodium! When you eat out, you usually add French fries and soda to your order, so add that all up and you’ll get an easy thousand calories just in one meal! And you haven’t even started supersizing yet.
9. Fried Foods
Fried Foods are high in fat and bad when it comes to dieting. The oils used to fry foods contains a lot of unhealthy fats. When dieting, it is best to grill or bake foods instead of frying. This allows you to enjoy your favorite foods in a healthier way.
10. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
One person should not take in more than 6 milligrams of MSG every day. If you take in too much, it can increase the content of glutamate in the blood, and inhibit the utilization of calcium and magnesium by the body. This not only can cause symptoms such as short-term headache and nausea, but can also bring adverse effect on human reproductive system. These are foods that commonly contain MSG
- Fast food. One of the best-known sources of MSG is fast food, particularly Chinese food.
- Chips and snack foods. Many manufacturers use MSG to boost the savory flavor of chips.
